Cerebral palsy is a congenital disorder which affects the motor skills of human beings. This condition affects infants and can even occur till the child is about three years old.
This condition cannot be cured and continues throughout the life of the person. The muscles of such people do not develop normally and this hinders them from performing basic tasks. Due to this, the patient is not able to move around like other people. The patient might also experience speech and hearing difficulties, accompanied by problems relating to their sight.
It is extremely important to monitor the diet of a person who is suffering from cerebral palsy. Their diet should include nourishing foods that are able to sustain them. Since such patients often experience difficulty while eating, it is important to give them small amounts of nutritious food at regular intervals.
Foods That Must be Avoided
Foods which are very sticky must be avoided as far as possible. Foods such as butter, peanut butter and cheese should also be avoided as they are very thick. The patient might find it difficult to chew and swallow such food items as they tend to stick to the palette.
Foods which are very greasy or fatty should also be avoided. If such foods are given, the child may gain excess weight due to the lack of sufficient exercise or activity. White bread must be avoided as this often leads to constipation.
A Diet Rich in Fiber
Those who suffer from cerebral palsy often experience the problem of acute constipation. This is even more common among those patients who do not consume sufficient amounts of fiber everyday.
To combat this problem, it is important to include an adequate amount of fiber in the diet of the patient. Whole grains, cereals and pulses must be consumed by the patient, on a regular basis. Carbohydrates must also be given to the patient everyday. Such foods will keep the patient nourished and will also prevent bouts of constipation.
Make Sure to Include Supplements
Many of those who suffer from cerebral palsy are unable to consume sufficient amounts of food. This is due to the fact that they do not have control over their bodily movements and are unable to chew or swallow properly.
In such situations, it is important to include liquid supplements which can nourish and strengthen the body of the person. A multivitamin and multi-mineral supplement in a liquid base is extremely important and must be given to the patient on a daily basis. Vitamin D and calcium supplements can also be given so as to promote the health of the bones and muscles.
Other Nourishing Foods
Apart from foods that are rich in fiber, it is also important to include fruits and vegetables in the diet of the patient.Green leafy vegetables are good sources of iron and must be consumed so as to prevent the occurrence of anaemia. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C and must be eaten or consumed in the form of juices. A patient must be given a serving of fresh fruits and vegetables along with every meal.
